Description:
1978 picket line discussion begins with recollections of the 1950 coal wage agreement, granting pensions and one contract for the entire industry (as earlier proposed by John L. Lewis). Disputes between union membership and leaders are aired. One interviewee is a woman miner, who presents difficulties in driving some equipment for which she seems too short. She reports getting mixed reactions when she first started mining, but also that older miners have been very patient in teaching her the craft. Another miner relates good times at Somerset, where all the miners helped each other (regardless of nationality). (transcripts of news broadcasts (Ed Bradley and Barry Sarafin, CBS News)): Miners are ordered to return to work for an 80-day cooling-off period. Quoting Pres. Carter: the Taft-Hartley Act is to be enforced. At least some mining must resume to prevent a national crisis; pickets will be barred and facilities will be guarded (if necessary, by the National Guard). Attorney-General Griffin Bell requested and was granted a temporary restraining order to end the strike. A hearing to request a Taft-Hartley injunction will be scheduled for next week. (returning to picket line interviews): We hear recollections of childhood life in the tent colony at the Somerset Mine. Shorty Hunter discusses photos of the start of the Somerset coal camp (1902-): workers lived in a tent colony until houses were built in 1904; they began work with oil lamps, pick & shovel mining. His mother was the first woman in the camp, and his father died in 1915. Coal mining was usually seasonal, with only 1-2 days of work per week in the summer. Among the major developments in the camp: a playground for the kids, and the introduction of safety lamps in the mine.
